TREATMENTS

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy dates back thousands of years. Experts believe it was the ancient Egyptians who first recognized its benefits, with plant oils being used in the treatment of a vast array of illnesses and complaints, as well as in the process of embalming. The Greeks were also great advocates of the science; in fact a book on herbal medicine by physician Pedacius Dioscorides was the Western world's principal reference book on the subject for well over a thousand years!

Much of the aromatherapy techniques that we use today can be traced back to ancient times, but we have also adopted many of the findings of the leading French chemist of the 1930's, Rene Gattefosse, as well as scientists Valnet and Maury who both carried out extensive research in the 1960's.

What is aromatherapy?

The word aromatherapy is made up from 'aroma', meaning smell, and 'therapy', meaning the treatment of a disorder, be it mental, physical or behavioural. So, the practice of aromatherapy is the treatment of a disorder using smells and aromas, namely essential oils.

How does aromatherapy work?

It is a holistic approach to healing, with specific plant oils suited to certain ailments. The oils are usually applied via massage, but can be used in a variety of other ways, for example, in the bath, worn as a perfume, or through vaporization using candles, pot pourris or incense sticks.

Classical Manipulation

Classical Manipulation is a straight-forward method of adjusting the bones of your body to maintain the correct alignment of your spine and to ensure that your body's nerve supply works efficiently. Through these subtle adjustments, the treatment can relieve pain and discomfort, increase mobility and provide a route to better health.

Your spinal column is made up of 24 moveable vertebrae, the sacrum, and the coccyx. This column also houses the spinal cord through which nerve information is transmitted to the rest of your body. Whilst the spinal column maintains correct alignment, nerve information is passed accurately. However, if any part of your spinal column becomes misaligned then a nerve may become impinged, compressed or stretched, distorting the information that passes along it. This can lead to pain, discomfort, or restricted mobility. A misalignment of the vertebrae or bones can occur for many reasons, some of the most common are incorrect lifting, car or sporting accidents, childbirth, falls, stress and poor posture.

Practitioners use only their hands to make adjustments to the bones of your body. The key to the success of the adjustments is on the speed, dexterity and accuracy with which they are performed.

Patients report a wide range of improvements. These range from relief from migraines, neck and shoulder problems, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome which are affected by the nerves coming from the top of the spine, to relief from lower back pain and sciatica which are relieved by adjustments to the lower spine. These improvements occur because the body is no longer receiving incorrect nerve information.

Hopi Ear Candles

(Thermo-Auricular Therapy)

Traditionally, ear candles were used by Shamanic healers as depicted in ancient rock paintings. Hopi means peaceful people and refer to a tribe of Pueblo Indians who are very spiritual and have vast medicinal knowledge.

The Hopi people would use ear candles before a trance in order to cleanse themselves of negativity. In the West, Hopi Ear Candles have become useful tools in treating ear, nose and throat disorders. They are especially effective in treating ear/sinus problems, ear wax removal, catarrh, sinusitis, glue ear, headaches, sore throats, colds, hayfever, migraine, tinnitus, vertigo and relieving pressure from diving/flying.

Natural ingredients are used to produce the ear candles which include 100% pure beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St John's Wort, Chamomile, Beta-Carotene and organically grown flax.

The process is extremely relaxing and soothing. A Hopi ear candle normally burns for 10-12 minutes. After the candle is extinguished, an ear, scalp and facial massage is carried out which further aids blood/lymph circulation and assists in draining the sinus tubes. The candles create a mild suction within the ear canal which helps to draw out impurities as well as balancing any pressure in the head/sinuses and ears. This chimney effect, together with the movement and heat of the flame, helps to create a vibration of air within the ear canal which subsequently gently massages the ear drum. Furthermore, the essential oils and herbs within the candle help to soothe any irritated areas, for example, dry skin or eczema within the ear canal.

Heat from the candle helps to stimulate the peripheral blood circulation which in turn boosts the immune system and reinforces lymphatic drainage. This is further reinforced in the massage following the candling whilst reflex zones/vital energy points are also stimulated.

Hypnosis

Stop smoking, loose weight, feel happier more confident. Rid yourself of any old unwanted habit or phobia easily, you'll be amazed at the quick effective results. We can help you with anything from nail biting to OCD.

The mind works on two levels the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind is the " weaker" part and contains the ability to reason, will power and the temporary memory. The subconscious is the real "power intricate computer" it contains emotions, imagination and most important of all the permanent memory. The strength of hypnosis lies in the fact that it provides a path way by accessing the subconscious mind and by altering an individual's perception of a particular activity or habit, desirable changes can be achieved easily.

Indian Head Massage

(Champissage)

There is no need to remove clothing although it should be noted that a cotton top or T shirt is probably the most comfortable thing to be wearing. Some clients prefer to remove their top to prevent any oil staining.

Treatment normally begins with a deep kneading and probing of the neck and shoulder muscles. At times similar to Osteopathy but with no crunching or cracking of joints. The head is then worked with the scalp being squeezed, rubbed, gently tapped and prodded. The hair is briskly tussled and gently combed.

Pressure points are gently worked on and the ears are tugged and pressed. Lastly the practitioner moves to the face, working with acupressure points to help relieve any sinus pressure, stimulate the circulation and increase alertness. The face is also very gently stroked.

Once a massage has been complete the client should remain at rest for at least 20 minutes.

Manual Lymph Drainage

(MLD)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is an advanced therapy in which the practitioner uses a range of specialised and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to move the skin in the direction of the lymph flow. This stimulates the lymphatic vessels which carry substances vital to the defence of the body and removes waste products. The first visit will include a consultation during which the therapist will recommend the number and frequency of future sessions. Each session will last approximately one hour. Where appropriate the therapist will work in conjunction with your medical practitioner.

What are the benefits?

MLD is both preventative and remedial and can enhance your well being. Furthermore, MLD:
  • Is deeply relaxing
  • Promotes the healing of fractures, torn ligaments, sprains and lessens pain.
  • Can improve many chronic conditions: sinusitis, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, acne and other skin conditions.
  • May strengthen the immune system.
  • Relieves fluid congestion: swollen ankles, tired puffy eyes and swollen legs due to pregnancy.
  • Is an effective component of the treatment and control of lymph oedema and assists in conditions arising from venous insufficiency.
  • Promotes healing of wounds and burns and improves the appearance of old scars.
  • Minimises or reduces stretch marks.

Massage

Massage is a form of touch that enables the body to relax, thus inducing a feeling of wellbeing. More vigorous forms of massage can free up tense muscles and help with stiff joints. Sometimes deep-seated emotions are released during a massage.

The body is covered with skin, which is the body's largest sensory organ. Messages are sent through the skin to the brain via the nervous system. Thus, massaging the skin has an effect on the entire body, including one's heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. It can also help to eliminate toxins from the body and improve muscle tone.

Massage facilitates the release of chemicals known as endorphins, the body's own natural painkillers, bringing about a feeling of relaxation and well being.

As stress levels reduce, the body's own natural healing abilities kick in. Massage also serves to reduce the body's levels of chemicals such as cortisol and norepinephrine, which if found in high dosages could seriously impair the immune system.

Main uses:
  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Headaches
  • AIDS
  • Muscular aches and pains.
People taking medication for pain-relief, epilepsy, etc., often find that after a time that they can lower their dosage, since massage enhances the effect of the medication they are currently on.

Metamorphic Technique

The Metamorphic Technique is the application of a light touch on the spinal reflexes of the feet, hands and head. Although it is not called a therapy, it is typically a very relaxing experience. Comments have often included 'a feeling of being grounded, balanced, lighter in outlook' and other similar descriptions indicating some form of release.

Just like the way a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, the ethos of the Metamorphic Technique is that whatever is appropriate for you will be released. This can often realise itself as old patterns changing. For some people profound changes can occur in a short time period whilst for others change may be more subtle.

Many people have reported that the Metamorphic Technique has helped release emotional fears from past shocks through life events such as surgery, bereavement, relationship problems, birth, an accident, and many other unexpected events. It can be used on its own or in conjunction with conventional and/or complementary medicine.

With the technique being both pleasant and relaxing many people enjoy having a session on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis. Many mothers who experience the technique in turn use it with their children with interesting results.

Natural Facelift Massage

This is a treatment that is designed to improve the appearance of the face by improving the condition of the tissues. Unlike many other treatments that purport to do this, it does not involve any suffering and has no side-effects. In fact it is extremely pleasant.

The therapy is truly holistic. Whilst it works on the skin and the facial muscles, it also induces a deep sense of relaxation in the person receiving it. It promotes a general feeling of wellbeing.

The massage movements encourage the top layer of skin cells to slough off, stimulating new cell growth.

Gentle stretching of the skin stimulates the circulation, so nutrients are better absorbed. Lymphatic drainage is also improved so toxins are more effectively removed

Tension, particularly over a protracted period, causes muscles to become over-contracted. This is as true of the face as anywhere else and is one common cause of facial lines. Massage will induce the muscles to relax and this will "lighten" the whole expression.

A course of the Natural Facelift Massage will:
  • Brighten the complexion
  • Lessen the appearance of lines and wrinkles
  • "Sculpt" the skin around the facial bones
  • Make the skin more taut
  • Improve the elasticity of the skin
A course of this treatment is normally 8 sessions, but may vary depending on the condition of the skin. The cost for 8 sessions is £175.

Having had a course, regular maintenance treatments are recommended at intervals of 4-6 weeks as, unfortunately, gravity is always with us! Individual sessions are £30 each.

Reflexology

Whilst the art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, it wasn't until 1913 that Dr William Fitzgerald introduced this therapy to the West as 'zone therapy'. He noted that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone.

In the 1930's Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is now known as reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy, which works on the feet to help heal the whole person not just the prevailing symptoms.

How can reflexology help me?

Reflexology can be used to help restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium. This gentle therapy encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance.

Reflexology has been shown to be effective for:
  • Back Pain
  • Migraine
  • Infertility
  • Arthritis
  • Sleep disorders
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Sports injuries
  • Digestive disorders
  • Stress-related conditions
Reflexology does not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe.

Who can benefit from reflexology?

Reflexology is suitable for all ages and may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. After you have completed a course of reflexology treatment for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain health and well-being.

While many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress, at the same time many doctors, consultants and other health care professionals recognise reflexology as a well established, respected and effective therapy.

With ever increasing levels of stress, it is important people take more responsibility for their own health care needs. Reflexology helps us to cope on a physical, mental and emotional level thereby encouraging us to heal and maintain health in all areas of our lives.

Reiki

Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy, an energy which is all around us.

Reiki is the name given to a system of natural healing which evolved in Japan from the experience and dedication of Dr Mikao Usui (d. 1926). Fired by a burning question, Dr Usui was inspired to develop this healing system from ancient teachings after many years of study, research and meditation. He spent the rest of his life practising and teaching Reiki. Today Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student.

There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive or learn to give a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed.

A Reiki Treatment

The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is a very simple process. The recipient simply lies on a couch and relaxes. If they are unable to lie down the treatment can be given in a sitting position, the main thing is for the recipient to be as comfortable as possible. There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki will pass through anything, even plaster casts. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body. The whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms. A full treatment usually takes 1 to 1½ hours with each position held for several minutes.

Which conditions can Reiki help?

It is possible to heal at any level of being: physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. Acute injuries can be helped to heal very quickly but more chronic illness takes longer. In some cases such as terminal illness, there is not enough time for the progress of the disease to be reversed. However, in such cases there is usually great benefit and enhancement of the quality of life giving a sense of peace and acceptance during the time remaining.

Reiki healing can be given anywhere at any time as no special equipment is needed. The practitioner is a channel which the energy is drawn through by the need or imbalance in the recipient. Neither person has to use any effort of will or concentration during this process.

As running water smoothes the jagged edges of a rock until it is small enough to roll away, Reiki flows to the areas of need, soothing pain and supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself. Reiki restores balance in one's life.

Spine Works

Spineworks is a complete and comprehensive physical therapy. It enables bodywork to include spinal alignment, the spine being the most important postural section of the body. Using effective and gentle techniques Spineworks releases muscles and connective tissue and then aligns the vertebrae with no force. By communicating with the body at a very deep neurological level the healing processes of the body are stimulated thus evaporating pain, relieving muscle spasm and speeding the healing processes. It is this approach that helps structural re-alignments to stay, rather than with some force techniques which require repeat treatments.

Rather than the practitioner seeking to relax muscles with his actions, Spineworks taps into the internal neurological memory and resets the link between the brain and the muscle (via the nerves and neurones). In this way it is the person's own system itself that releases and relaxes the muscle. Relaxing spasmed muscle releases holding patterns which allows any misaligned skeletal structures to fall back into place and gives space and time for all the healing processes of the body to start working.

What is different about Spineworks?
  • Bones do not move by themselves.
  • Muscles move them.
  • Muscles do not move by themselves.
  • Nerves tell them.
  • Nerves do not give the instructions by themselves.
  • The brain tells them
Spineworks works in co-operation with this process keeping within each person's comfort zone. It recognises each person's unique body history of injuries and pain - in many cases the present pain is the result of all the small knocks and bumps that a person has had in their life.

Spineworks can help:
  • Back Pain & Back Problems
  • Leg-length differences
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Sciatica RSI.
  • Frozen shoulder etc
  • Headaches and Migraine
  • Scoliosis
  • Physical Pain
  • Pelvis Problems
